January 14 is National Organize Your Home Day
Happy New Year from Nashville Home Organizers! At the beginning of this new year, we want to celebrate one of our favorite calendar events, National Organize Your Home Day, on January 14. It invites us to roll up our sleeves and engage in the often-overlooked task of organizing our houses. It presents a fantastic opportunity to revitalize our living spaces and create a more harmonious environment.

For some, this task can be daunting. But we are here with some tips to help you start!

4 Steps To Organize Your Home

Step 1: Identify One Space That Needs an S.O.S.

Step 1: Identify One Space That Needs an S.O.S.
Choose one specific area to streamline the process and prevent the feeling of being overwhelmed by tackling an entire room. Setting your sights on a manageable space sets the stage for success.

Here are a few spaces to choose from:
  • A kitchen drawer - maybe the one that raises your stress level every time you open it
  • That shelf in your closet that’s piled up with sweaters (and jeans, misplaced jewelry, and a lone flip-flop)
  • Got another space that’s been piling up? A guest bed, an unused dining table, or a corner that catches everything? Remember when you decided to put it there and get to it later? It’s later. Let’s start there.

Step 2: The Five-Minute Blitz

Step 2: The Five-Minute Blitz
Set a five-minute timer and swiftly remove everything from your chosen space. (Maybe you can beat the timer and do it in 2 or 3 minutes!) Don't dwell on individual items—simply take them out and create a blank canvas. This lightning-fast step sets the stage for the magic that follows.

Ready, set, go!

Step 3: Sorting Simplified - Discard, Donate, Keep

Step 3: Sorting Simplified - Discard, Donate, Keep
Now comes sorting! Channel your inner organizer and categorize items into three groups: objects to throw away, rehome, or simply put away.

It can be helpful to start with bags, boxes, or bins and label them before you start.

  • Discard: Bid farewell to broken, unused, or obsolete items. It might be time to part ways if it's gathering dust or not functional.
  • Donate: Items in good condition but no longer serving you can find new life elsewhere. Whether it's clothes, books, or gadgets, your donation could make someone else's day brighter.
  • Keep: These essentials are important to you or hold practical value. Consider what you genuinely use and need.

Step 4: Put Away Your Items To Keep

Step 4: Put Away Your Items To Keep
With the clutter sorted and decisions made, it's time to restore order. Neatly return any items that belong to the cleared space. Invest in storage containers to keep the area neat. There are many affordable solutions at Target, Dollar Tree, and Amazon.

Sort the remaining items into categories like:
  • The room where they belong - Personal hygiene items in the bathroom and cooking supplies in the kitchen
  • Use of items - Cleaning supplies in a cabinet or supply closet
  • Frequency - Christmas decorations in the attic or sports gear in the garage

Small spaces can yield big impacts when given a little TLC. After all, organizing becomes contagious. Once you’ve tackled one space, you’ll be ready to take on another! Maximize the momentum and repeat the steps listed above!

The sense of accomplishment that comes with a well-organized space is unmatched—it's a gift you give to yourself. Anyone can put these steps into practice, but if you need help, Nashville Home Organizers is here to help you transform your space so you can revel in the joy of a more organized home.

Ultimately, a clutter-free environment can work wonders for the mind and soul. Cheers to a more organized and serene living space!
