Home Organizing Ideas for Winter
Are you feeling the winter blues? When temperatures drop and the days shorten, it can be easy to let your goals hibernate. While we agree this is an excellent time of year to cuddle in a blanket with a good book, many organizing ideas are perfect for winter. You can embrace a season of rest and make progress in organizing your home.
There are many benefits to tackling winter organization projects:
  • Organizing in the winter can keep you warm on a chilly day.
  • Moving your body and getting those steps in (let’s finally get those Christmas decorations into the attic).
  • Brightening a space can combat SAD (seasonal affective disorder), AKA seasonal depression. The Seattle Times reminds us, "Creating a brighter, uncluttered environment can help ward off melancholy, especially for those who spend most of their hours inside.”

Here are a few winter organizing projects to declutter your space and lift your mood.

1. Give Your Garage an Overhaul

Give your garage an overhaul.
If your garage is on your to-do list, there's no time like the present! Tackle it now before the weather gets too warm. A clean, organized garage sets the tone for the year and makes accessing tools and gear a breeze. Still, organizing a garage is a big undertaking! Be sure to break it into manageable steps.

Discard or Recycle Trash - Garages become landing zones for broken items with little or no life–broken flower pots, unused household items, furniture, and miscellaneous scraps of wood, metal, or whatever you’ve worked on in the last five years. Take a good look to decide what needs to go, bag it up, and take it out! This will usually clear out a lot of space, making the job feel less overwhelming.

Donate - While you are at it, remove items you no longer need or use, like duplicate tools, unused sporting gear that still has life, or equipment for a neglected garden bed. Take these items to a local donation center.

Create Zones - Designate specific areas for different purposes (a workshop area, a landing pad for sports equipment, an outdoor activities zone). Zones help maintain order and make it easier to navigate. Keep frequently used items accessible. Place commonly used tools or equipment within easy reach on pegboards, drawers, or shelves.

Once you’ve cleared the clutter and created zones, you can set aside time to tackle it all at once or break up the task into several days.

So, make a plan, grab a hoodie, and get to work!

2. Manage Your Mudroom

Manage your mudroom
Is your mudroom getting too muddy? The mudroom is a gateway for a wintery mess! Those boots can multiply fast (along with all the dirt that comes in on them!) Give your mudroom a good mid-winter spruce up!

Declutter, wipe down surfaces and reorganize this high-traffic area to restore functionality and order. Say goodbye to the muddy chaos and welcome a more organized mudroom into your winter routine.

3. Files and Photos

files and photos
How often have you looked at your over-stuffed filing cabinet and told yourself you would get to it later? Why not organize them now? Grab an armful of files or photos and a cup of coffee, and turn on a favorite movie or playlist. With a cozy ambiance and a focused mind, sorting through those files will feel less daunting.

You'll trim that pile in no time!

4. Brighten Your Bookshelves

Brighten your bookshelves
Styling your bookshelves isn’t a “one-and-done” task. There are many ways to change things and give your reading nook a new life. Start by clearing off your bookshelves, dusting them, and then find your inner decorator.

Give these tips a try:
  • Use a theme or color scheme. Arrange your books by hue or add pieces that give a pop of color. Add decorations for an upcoming holiday (Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!) or display some favorite sports memorabilia.
  • Find some interesting pieces in your house (or the garage you've just cleaned!) Books, bowls, vases, candles, and baskets will give your bookshelf a classic look. Use clocks, greenery, and geometric shapes for statement pieces.
  • Add something personal by framing the kid's artwork, adding a globe, or pulling out baby pictures you tucked away long ago.

Just give it a go with something new!
