Organizing Holiday Decorations in 3 Easy Steps
Nothing transforms a home like the first touch of Christmas décor. Whether you start in early November or wait until the turkey leftovers are gone, your decorations help create the warmth you want during the holidays. For most families, once the lights go up, the rest of the season moves fast. Christmas parties, teacher gifts, school programs, family gatherings, and last-minute shopping take over your calendar.

By the time you take everything down in late December or January, you are tired. After all that Christmas cheer, the thought of organizing your decorations can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t need to!

We want to make it simple for you. Here is an easy guide for organizing your holiday decorations in three steps.

1. Purge Seasonal Decorations

There are probably a few decorations that never made it out of the bin this year. Maybe your style changed, or you downsized. The easiest time to declutter is right after you finish decorating.

You may also notice items that need a refresh. For example, ornaments purchased twenty years ago might look a little faded. Blue ornaments that were once bright may look more grey now. Plan to replace or toss anything that is discolored, broken, or showing signs of age.

2. Invest in Decoration Storage

The right Christmas storage makes next year’s decorating so much easier. Investing in high-quality holiday decoration storage containers might feel silly if you pay more for them than you did for the after-Christmas bargains. But if you store your decorations well, they will last much longer.

A few helpful storage ideas include:

Clear Plastic Storage Bins

A medium to large storage tote can pack a punch for holiday storage. Clear bins help you see what is inside. These totes are great for bulky items like:
  • Bulky items
  • Table cloths
  • Gift tags
  • Gift bags
  • Holiday crafts
  • Linens
  • Miscellaneous supplies.

Shoe Boxes

A plastic shoebox (also known as a 6-quart container) is perfect for less fragile ornaments, string lights, and small trinkets. Label each box so you know what belongs in each one. These can be stacked neatly into large storage bins for easy transfer.

Gift Wrap Storage Ideas

Buy a gift wrap organizer or try this organizing hack: save the carrying cases from foldable camping chairs. When a chair breaks, keep the case because it becomes the perfect storage bag for rolls of wrapping paper. Everything is contained and easy to carry.

Christmas Tree Storage Bag

Christmas tree storage bags are a smart way to store artificial trees. It protects the branches from dust and helps you carry the tree without the struggle.

Ornament Storage Boxes

These storage solutions protect fragile Christmas ornaments. You can also use bubble wrap or packing paper if you do not have divided boxes.

Wreath Storage

Wreath bags or plastic wreath boxes keep your greenery clean and help it hold its shape.

Remember to label your Christmas items! A simple label on each bin (Tree Lights, Mantle Decor, Outdoor Decor, Gift Wrap, Kids Crafts, Ornaments, etc.) saves time when you decorate next year.

3. Choose a Dedicated Space for Holiday Decor

Choose one spot in your home to store all your seasonal decorations. Keeping everything together helps you stay organized year after year. Some families use an extra closet. Others use attic space, a basement, or a specific corner of a storage room.

What you want to avoid is a little bit here and a little bit there. If your bins are in the garage, your shoeboxes are in a hall closet, and your tree is in the attic, next year’s decorating will start with frustration. Keeping everything in one place helps you pull it out quickly when the next holiday season arrives.
