Downsizing for Your Next Move

Downsizing for Your Next Move
Whether you're moving across Nashville or across the street, we can all agree on one thing. Moving with less is best. Downsizing before you move isn’t just about getting rid of things; it’s about giving yourself a fresh start and making the unpacking process so much easier. After helping countless families unpack, we can say this for sure: less clutter means less stress.

Benefits of Downsizing Before You Move

Even if you’re not moving into a smaller home, chances are you don’t need to take everything with you. If you think about it, there are probably 20 (or more) items hanging in your closet right now that you already know you don’t wear. Why spend time, energy, and money packing them, only to unpack them later?

A few benefits of downsizing before a move:
  • Save time and money. Fewer boxes mean fewer movers, less packing material, and possibly a smaller moving truck.
  • Make unpacking easier. You’ll open a box and find only the things you love and need.
  • Have a fresh start. Let your life in your new home be a clean slate, not boxes full of “maybes.”

Some things are better left behind. That pile of wood scraps your husband swears he’ll use “someday” might not be worthy of the cross-country journey.

Embrace your move as a new beginning. So bring the photo albums, the family heirlooms, and the favorite coffee mugs. But the running shoes your college boyfriend gave you 20 years ago? It’s time to say goodbye and make room for what’s next.

Emotional Reasons That Keep You from Downsizing

We know some things tug at the heartstrings. It’s easy to attach memories to items, even ones collecting dust. But remember: letting go of things doesn’t mean letting go of the memories.

Try this: take photos of sentimental items before parting with them, or keep one meaningful item from a larger collection. You aren't erasing your past; you’re making space for your future.

6 Tips for Downsizing Your Home

1. Plan Ahead

Downsizing isn’t something you want to rush through a week before moving day. Start by creating a simple timeline. Jot down which rooms you’ll tackle each week leading up to the move. Focus first on spaces you don’t use every day, like the attic, guest room, or garage. That way, you’ll build momentum without disrupting your daily routine.

Planning doesn’t mean doing everything at once. Small, consistent progress is better than a weekend marathon.

2. Decide What Items You Really Need

Here’s where the real work begins. Decide what deserves a spot in your next home. When you’re sorting through your belongings, it’s easy to tell yourself, “I might need that someday.” But if you haven't used it in the last year or two, you probably don't need it anymore.

Ask yourself, “Would I buy this again today?” If you wouldn’t spend your money on it now, it probably doesn’t need to make the move with you.

As you decide what to keep, think about your next season of life and how your home will serve you there. Here are a few questions to guide your decisions:
  • Are you embracing a new lifestyle? Maybe your kids are older now, and you’re ready to part with the baby gear. Or you’re working from home and don’t need as many office clothes anymore.
  • Are you moving to a new climate? If you’re leaving snowy winters behind, you won’t need five heavy coats and three pairs of snow boots.
  • What is the floor plan of your new home? Smaller closets, a different kitchen setup, or fewer storage areas can change what makes sense to bring.
  • Are your hobbies or routines changing? Be honest about what you actually use and enjoy, not what you wish you used. (Looking at you, bread maker from 2016.)
  • Will this item make your new home feel peaceful or cluttered? Everything you choose to pack for your new home should add value to your daily life or make your new space feel more like you.

3. Come to the Task with a Can-Do Mindset

Downsizing can stir up a lot of emotions like nostalgia, stress, and maybe a little guilt. It’s easy to get bogged down thinking about how much there is to do or how hard it is to let go of certain things. But this is your chance to take control of your move and create a home that truly fits your life right now.

Approach the process with positivity and purpose. Instead of dwelling on what you’re losing, focus on what you’re gaining: less clutter, more breathing room, and a smoother transition into your new home.

Try setting a timer for short bursts of work, then reward yourself with a break or a coffee run. Those small wins add up fast!

Perfection isn’t the goal. Every drawer you clean out, box you donate, and unnecessary item you release is progress!

4. Declutter Your Current Home Before You Pack

Before you start filling boxes, take time to declutter with purpose. Start with one room at a time and make honest decisions. Do you use it? Do you love it? Does it fit your life now? If not, it doesn’t need to tag along on your move.

Set up three bins, boxes, or bags labeled "keep," "donate," and "trash." This simple system keeps you focused and helps you avoid second-guessing.

Since you’re preparing for a move, have packing boxes ready for the things you plan to keep but don’t need right away. Seasonal decor, off-season clothing, or extra kitchen items can all be packed now and stacked neatly out of the way. You’ll declutter and make headway on packing at the same time.

5. Invest in Smart Storage Solutions

Investing in smart storage solutions now can make both your move and your unpacking process much smoother.

Think outside the box (literally). Sturdy, stackable drawers, clear plastic totes, and under-bed storage containers can double as both packing tools and long-term organization systems in your new home. The bonus? You’ll know exactly what’s inside each one without having to dig through mystery boxes later.

If you’re moving locally, you can even use baskets or bins. Secure the contents with plastic wrap or painter’s tape, and they’ll be ready to slide right into place at your new house.

Here are a few packing tips:
  • Label as you pack. Use color-coded stickers or tape to match boxes to rooms.
  • Group by category. Instead of tossing “miscellaneous” items together, pack by type (linens, office supplies, tools, etc.).
  • Protect fragile items. Store them in soft bins or lined totes that can move easily without damage.
  • Reuse what you have. Laundry baskets, shoe bins, and even reusable grocery bags make great temporary storage while moving.

Pro tip: Small plastic drawer units are a game-changer. You can wrap them up as-is, move them easily, and set them straight into your new closets or bathrooms with no unpacking required.

6. Ask for Help

Whether it’s friends, neighbors, or professional help, you don’t have to do this alone. Downsizing (and moving in general) is a big job, and having an extra set of hands makes a world of difference.
